Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is used to correct severe bite issues, jaw bone irregularities, and alignment problems that can’t be fixed with braces or aligners alone.

When is surgical orthodontics needed?

Surgical orthodontics is typically recommended for adults whose jaws have finished growing (around age 16 for females and 18 for males). It’s needed when the upper and lower jaws don’t line up properly and traditional orthodontics can’t correct the issue alone. The surgery helps align your jaw, and then braces are used to move your teeth into their perfect positions.

How will I know if I need surgery?

At your consultation, Dr. Fischer, Dr. Richards or Dr. Walker will carefully evaluate your bite and jaw alignment. If surgical orthodontics is part of your treatment plan, he will explain everything in detail so you can feel confident moving forward.

What happens during orthognathic surgery?

Your surgery will be performed by an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon in a hospital setting. The procedure length varies by case, but after surgery, you’ll need about two weeks of recovery. We recommend taking time off from work or school during this period to rest and heal.

Once your jaw has healed, the doctor will fine-tune your bite with braces. Most patients wear braces for an additional six to twelve months after surgery, followed by a retainer to help maintain their beautiful new smile.
