Your First Orthodontic Consultation: What to Expect

So…what happens at your initial orthodontic visit? That is a great question and one that deserves some answers but the most important thing to know is that this will be the EASIEST visit that one will ever have at a dental office! The visit is meant to be very informative in a relaxed atmosphere so that we can get to know each other while at the same time discussing any orthodontic concerns and treatment needs.

When you arrive at our office for the initial visit you will be greeted by one of our friendly treatment coordinators (TC) and be escorted into one of our initial exam rooms. The TC will review some of the information we gathered from you during the initial phone call and ask some additional questions so that we can best understand any concerns that you and/or dentist may have. The treatment coordinator will usually then take a FREE orthodontic X-Ray (if one hasn’t been provided from your dentist) which provides some very valuable information such as tooth development, eruption and position.

After the X-ray has been taken, one of our board certified orthodontists will then come into the room to meet you and/or your child. He will introduce himself and then review some important information such as health history, as well as any orthodontic concerns you or your dentist have.  This is followed by a thorough clinical examination discussing any significant findings such as one’s bite, crowding, spacing, etc. Any x-rays are then reviewed looking for specific things such as tooth development/positions and any missing or extra teeth. A significant amount of information is gathered and discussed during the clinical examination but it couldn’t be any easier for the patient…a mirror is the ONLY tool necessary. 😊

After the radiographic and clinical examination, one of our board certified orthodontists will answer any questions and make some recommendations. If no treatment is recommended at this time, we will place the patient on 6-12 month recall intervals monitoring tooth development and eruption. If treatment is recommended, our treatment coordinator will go over the next steps and provide a cost estimate as well as any pertinent insurance information.
