The Latest Innovations in Orthodontic Technology

Technological innovation is one of the most important aspects of dentistry. This is especially true in the world of orthodontics where technology in our field is increasing at a lightning-fast pace. The doctors and staff at Coastal Carolina Orthodontics realize this, and we are constantly researching, testing and implementing the newest and best technology available.

So what does all this technology have to do with you, the patient? Well, the answer is quite simple…..everything!! It influences the treatment plan and the patient’s experience from start to finish. While most of the innovations are directly related to creating the smile, some advancements go beyond the braces.

Even before your orthodontic journey begins, your experience will be much quicker and easier than generations before. If you ask people that have had braces in the past what the worst part was, many of them will say those goopy mouth molds that they had to have at the beginning and end of treatment. Our digital 3-D scans are more accurate and much more patient friendly than those old tray impressions that left people gagging and choking. 

When it comes to braces, the Smile Makers were some of the first doctors in Eastern NC to use the modern self-ligating SPEED braces. These braces are some of the smallest and most advanced in the world. They use ultra light forces that can provide a much more comfortable start to treatment compared to older traditional braces. These light forces also allow for the fastest and most efficient tooth movement possible. The braces themselves have a super flexible NASA technology nickel titanium clip, which allows for very accurate tooth movement. This clip also provides faster wire changes, so you will have quicker appointments.

In some cases, we can also create your smile with advanced clear aligners. The Smile Makers routinely use 3-D scanning in combination with the Invisalign system to provide an aesthetic alternative to braces. These clear aligners have been a wonderful addition to our practice for many years.  These clear aligners are an accurate and comfortable way to create your custom smile.

After your Smile Makers transformation is complete, you will need to transition to retainers to maintain your results. We begin with another 3-D scan and send that digital scan to our in-house 3-D printer to produce an accurate model of your teeth. We will then use that model to make your clear removable retainers. You can keep this 3-D printed model in case you need new retainers in the future. Many of our patients also get fixed wire retainers behind their front teeth. Again, we utilize the 3-D scans in combination with a wire bending robot to produce a precise, flush fit wire that will nicely adapt to the back of your teeth.
