Orthodontic Headgear

by smilemakersnc on Friday, February 2, 2018 12:00 PM

Sometimes braces alone aren't enough to move teeth into a better position, or correct a problematic bite or misaligned jaw growth. In those situations, one of our practice’s trusted orthodontists may recommend the use of special appliances, such as orthodontic headgear. Orthodontic headgear is worn partly outside the mouth and applies just enough force to move the teeth properly and guide your face and jaw growth.

Importance of Lifetime Retainer Wear

by smilemakersnc on Friday, December 15, 2017 11:49 AM

Man SmilingWhen you finish your orthodontic treatment, you are excited to be free of the appliances you’ve had to put up with—brackets, wires, aligners, and so on. However, while it is certainly important to revel in the freedom of your new smile, equally important is taking the necessary action to retain it. And that comes down to one word — retainers.

After completing orthodontic treatment under the care of the skilled orthodontists at Coastal Carolina Orthodontics, you will be prescribed a retainer that will be custom-made to fit your smile. Your orthodontist will give you instructions for how and when to wear this retainer, characterizing it as your “post orthodontic treatment phase” or “retention phase.” It can last from a few months to a year. But, while that is the prescribed time for the phase, it is truly recommended that you continue wearing your retainer past that. Maybe not with the same prescribed consistency your orthodontist initially provided, but at least with some regularity.

Thumb Sucking & Tongue Thrusting

by smilemakersnc on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 8:42 AM

Thumb and finger sucking habits are a perfectly natural way for babies and toddlers to soothe themselves. However, as a child grows there comes a point when this comforting habit can cause more harm than good.

While it is completely natural for children to engage in thumb sucking during the first few years of life, prolonging the habit could cause social awkwardness and damage to the jaw’s growth pattern.

Early Orthodontic Treatment

by smilemakersnc on Friday, November 17, 2017 8:57 AM

It’s never too late to begin orthodontic treatment. But when it comes to your child’s teeth, earlier is better than later. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial screening at age 7 to determine if early orthodontic treatment is right for your child. In most cases, if orthodontic work is needed, one of our orthodontists will simply monitor your child’s growth patterns until the best time for treatment is determined.

Coastal Carolina Orthodontics can get your child started on the path to oral and dental health from the very first visit. At this early age we can answer any questions you may have and begin evaluating your child’s tooth and jaw development. Each child’s speed and process of development is different, but early orthodontic treatment can be hugely beneficial for their futures.

All About Toothpaste

Toothpaste: it's something most people use every day, but rarely give much thought to—except, perhaps, when choosing from the brands that line the drugstore shelf.

Pregnancy & Your Child’s Developing Teeth

by smilemakersnc on Friday, September 1, 2017 1:06 PM

At Coastal Carolina Orthodontics, it’s our mission to offer efficient and effective services that help our patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles.

As part of this commitment, we’re always happy to share information on how you and your family can maintain great dental and oral health. For example, for all those soon-to-be parents out there, did you know that there are steps you can take during pregnancy to ensure your child develops healthy teeth?

Many people don’t realize that even though a newborn’s teeth aren’t visible, they still exist beneath the gums. Children’s primary (baby) teeth actually start forming during the sixth week of pregnancy and mineralize during the third or fourth month of pregnancy. As such, proper dental care should start even before a baby is born.

At Coastal Carolina Orthodontics, we are passionate about helping our patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles. As part of this commitment, we're constantly working to make orthodontic treatment more convenient and more effective for our patients.

While traditional metal braces are still the most popular form of treatment we offer at our Jacksonville, Morehead City, and Havelock offices, there's a revolutionary alternative that's helping people achieve a beautiful smile without the need for metalwork: Invisalign!

Jaw Surgery

by smilemakersnc on Thursday, July 6, 2017 12:06 PM

The dedicated orthodontists of Coastal Carolina Orthodontics provide a wide range of high quality orthodontic services to patients of all ages in our friendly and comfortable Jacksonville, Morehead City, and Havelock office environments.

Corrective jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery, is one of the many services we offer. During this procedure, the jaws are moved into more optimal positions for function, resulting in a healthier bite and more attractive smile. Because moving the jaws also moves the teeth, this surgery is usually performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to ensure the teeth are properly positioned after surgery.

People who’ve undergone jaw surgery enjoy many benefits, including an improved ability to chew, speak, and breathe. This surgery can also dramatically enhance your facial appearance.

Mouthguards Image

Orthodontists and dentists alike stress the importance of protecting teeth from the internal harm of decay and disease. However, it is just as important to protect your teeth from external force and trauma - everything from teeth grinding to obtaining an injury during a sporting event.

For best protective measures in these types of situations, your trusted Jacksonville, Morehead City, and Havelock orthodontists recommend the use of mouthguards.
